Common Air-Conditioning Myths and Why You Shouldn’t Believe Them

Tips From AC and Heating Repair Experts

As HVAC technicians, we’ve met and spoken with dozens of people who need help with fixing the heating and cooling systems in their homes. Through our conversations with these homeowners, we’ve realized that plenty of folks have misconceptions about HVAC equipment. We’ve listed some of the common AC and heating repair myths that we have encountered:

Myth #1: ACs control only the temperature in the room.

While it’s true that your air-conditioning system is responsible for temperature regulation, take note that this isn’t its sole responsibility! This is because your AC also dehumidifies your indoor area and ensures that your living space always has the right humidity levels. This is the number-one reason to make sure that your air-conditioning unit is the right size for your home: if it’s too big, it will cycle faster than normal and won’t be able to properly dehumidify your home. This, in turn, can lead to humidity issues like mold and mildew growth.

Myth #2: Turning down the thermostat will cool your house quicker.

Most air-conditioning units are designed to function at a steady speed. This means that your AC won’t be able to cool your house at a faster rate when you set the thermostat to the lowest temperature — it will simply continue to run until it reaches your desired temperature. Because of this, you shouldn’t make it a habit to set the thermostat to the lowest setting just so your house will cool quicker; if you do, you’ll put your AC through unnecessary wear and tear and shorten its lifespan.

Don’t let these myths stop you from making the most of your air-conditioning unit!
